Brentford have made an improved offer for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson, but Tottenham are rated as favourites in the £50million race for the forward.
The west London club are refusing to give up on a player they have viewed as a priority target all summer despite seeing Spurs ramp up their interest in recent days.
The Bees have already seen two offers, the second worth in the region of £35m, for Johnson rejected.
Brentford have now made a third offer closer to £40m as they look to steal a march on Spurs.
Tottenham and Forest are in direct talks over a transfer with the expectancy of a formal bid later this week.

If Brentford and Spurs can reach agreement it is understood Johnson find it hard to turn down a move to play under Ange Postecoglou, who has earned rave reviews since his appointment as head coach at Tottenham.
Both sides are in need of goals, with Tottenham selling Harry Kane to Bayern Munich for £100m and Brentford losing Ivan Toney to a betting ban.
Brentford have been relying on Yoanne Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo to provide the biggest scoring threat but are keen on bringing Johnson in to join them.
Meanwhile Ange Postecoglou is having to rely on out of form Brazilian Richarlison up front, who is yet to get off the mark in the Premier League this season.
