England defender Ben White has left the team's World Cup training camp for "personal reasons" and isn't expected to return to the squad for the rest of the tournament, the FA have confirmed.

The Arsenal defender, who missed training ahead of the Three Lions' clash with Wales due to illness, has returned to the UK and won't play any further part at the footballing showpiece.

The FA said: "Ben White has left England’s training base in Al Wakrah and returned home for personal reasons. The Arsenal defender is not expected to return to the squad for the remainder of the tournament. We ask that the player’s privacy is respected at this moment in time."

Gareth Southgate cannot call up a replacement so England will have 25 players for the remainder of the tournament.

The 25-year-old hadn't played a single minute of football in any of England's opening three games, but was tipped to push for a starting spot if Gareth Southgate opted to use a back five.

White's club, Arsenal, tweeted: "We're all with you, Ben," in response to the news.

White, who has earned just four caps since making his international debut last year, has been in superb form for the Gunners this season but has struggled to force his way into Southgate's plans. He was left at home during Euro 2020 last summer and fans feared he'd miss the World Cup too after he was left out of England's final squad ahead of the tournament.

It comes following news that England defender Luke Shaw turned down the chance to fly home from the World Cup following the death of grandmother.
