David Beckham reveals how an ultimatum from former England boss Fabio Capello put a strain on his marriage with his wife Victoria.
The Beckham family were settled to life in Los Angeles, with David playing his football at MLS side LA Galaxy.
After having to fight to prove himself at Real Madrid under Fabio Capello, he found himself having to do the same during the Italian’s time as England manager.
As revealed in Beckham’s new Netflix documentary, Capello had told him that he had to ‘return to reality’ to make the 2010 World Cup squad.
Beckham revealed: ‘He said, you have to play for a European club at the highest level. How about AC Milan? I was like, ‘OK’. Victoria totally understood.’
David Beckham has revealed how an ultimatum from Fabio Capello put a strain on his relationship with Victoria during his time at LA Galaxy
Victoria was left ‘really upset’ after signing up for family life in Los Angeles, only for Beckham to twice go out on loan to AC Milan in an attempt to boost his England hopes
Capello told Beckham to ‘return to reality’ and play for a top European club in order to be selected for the Italian’s England squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa
Victoria, recalling the moment she was told, said: ”What do you mean you want to go to Milan?’
‘We have just moved from one side of the world to the other, for you. What I signed up for was us being in LA as a family.
‘So I didn’t expect to turn up to LA, have everything perfect and then he goes ‘surprise, I’m going away again’
‘It was going to be another time when I was left at home on my own with the kids. They were in in school.
‘I respected his career and always have done immensely, but not again. I was really upset and off he went.’
David added: ‘Selfishly, that was me saying what any of you think, this is what I need to do.
‘I wasn’t thinking about my team-mates or family. I was thinking about me.
‘If there’s an opportunity for me to play for my country in a World Cup. I will do whatever I can to make that happen.’
A ruptured Achilles tendon eventually prevented Beckham (right) from playing at the tournament
Beckham ultimately had two separate loan stints at AC Milan in 2009 and 2010 and would make 16 appearances out of a possible 20 for England under Capello.
His best efforts to make the 2010 World Cup squad though ultimately did not matter after he missed the tournament after rupturing his Achilles tendon in March that year.
Beckham in his Netflix documentary also recalled the moment Capello told him he would never play for Real Madrid again after learning about interest from LA Galaxy.
