Chelsea fans praised "astounding" goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after he helped the Blues secure a 1-0 win against Brentford.

Defender Ben Chilwell scored the only goal of the game to send Thomas Tuchel's side back to the top of the Premier League.

Victory wouldn't have been possible without the heroics of Mendy, who threw himself at everything in the final 20 minutes.

The 29-year-old made vital saves from Ivan Toney, Saman Ghoddos and Pontus Jansson, denying the Dane from point-blank range with his face.

But he saved his best until last, pulling off another spectacular stop to deny Christian Norgaard's goal-bound overhead kick in injury time.

Mendy's performance received huge plaudits from Chelsea fans after the match.

One supporter wrote: "The shoulders of this man must hurt so much from carrying the team today."

Someone else said: "Holy s***. So many game winning saves. Unreal."

Another person chimed in with: "That's why this guy should have been shortlisted for ballon d'or."

While a fourth user simply put: "World class."

It wasn't only the club's supporters who lathered praise on the stopper.

Match-winner Chilwell told Sky Sports: "In the last 20 minutes to half an hour they were really pushing them on and it was hell on earth.

"Mendy was superb. We see it every day in training and he is now getting the credit he deserves by making big saves to get us the points."

Frustrated Brentford boss Thomas Frank added: "He is a top goalkeeper, too good for us, and I said that to him.

"Well done to him. It is what it is, I'm very pleased for him."

While Blues defender Antonio Rudiger wrote on Twitter: "Someone explain why he’s not nominated for the ballon d’or. What a performance… EDOUARD MENDY."

Mendy's shut-out was his 20th in the Premier League in only his 38th start in the top-flight.

Only four stoppers – including former Stamford Bridge hero Petr Cech – have required fewer starts to reach the same tally in the competition's history.
