Arsenal and boss Mikel Arteta may have to rethink their summer transfer plans with target Julian Brandt reportedly set to be the subject of a huge offer from Borussia Dortmund. The German playmaker has been linked to both the Gunners and their north London rivals Tottenham but may decide against making a move to the Premier League.

Brandt’s contract at Dortmund expires at the end of the next season, with Arsenal and Spurs on red alert at the possibility of signing the German international for a bargain fee – but he is reportedly set to be offered a new deal at the Bundesliga side. German outlet DW via HITC claim that an “astronomical contract upgrade” is being prepared for Brandt as they look to tie down their star to a long-term contract.

German journalist Christian Falk has explained that Arsenal are more prepared than ever to push for Brandt as they look to bolster Arteta’s squad ahead of next season. “He’s been dreaming for years of making it in the Premier League,” Falk wrote for CaughtOffside.

“There has always been contact with Arsenal and we’ve heard that the club is interested again. His contract expires in 2024, so there has to be a decision, especially now that he’s found more consistency this term in comparison to recent years at Dortmund.

“Now, it could be the time to make the next step and follow [Kai] Havertz to England. He hasn’t got one club in his head at the moment, but Arsenal are of course more interested than ever before.”

Brandt has scored eight goals and recorded four assists in the Bundesliga so far this campaign and has transformed into one of Dortmund’s most valuable players as they look to push Bayern Munich for the title. The 26-year-old’s resurgence in the second half of the season under boss Edin Terzic may have forced the club’s hand into offering him a bumper new contract considering they are resigned to losing star man Jude Bellingham this summer.

Whether Brandt would be willing to extend his stay in Germany remains to be seen, considering claims that he has been dreaming of a move to England. However, if Arsenal do beat the likes of Spurs and Chelsea to his signature, Brandt would likely be competing with captain Martin Odegaard for the number 10 role at the Emirates.

Brandt is a versatile midfielder that can operate in midfield and out wide, though Arteta does have a number of options to call upon and the German would face a challenge to get into the team. He has been a long-term target of the Gunners, however, and responded to interest from north London two years ago.

“Of course, it’s nice when other clubs express interest,” Brandt told RTL in 2021. “But from my side, there has never been any signs that I was thinking about a transfer. I don’t think I’ll be playing anywhere else this year.”
