Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the Gabon squad early and boarded a flight to London ahead of their final World Cup qualifier according to reports in Africa but the reason behind his departure is not yet known. The Gunners frontman netted the winner for his country last Friday as they beat Libya 1-0 but Gabon are now unable to qualify for Qatar 2022.

Aubameyang’s side were unable to set up a winner-takes-all showdown ahead of the final game against Egypt, who have already booked their place at next December’s tournament.

The Arsenal striker was therefore left out of the squad, although the reasons behind his absence are yet to have been confirmed.

Gabonese newspaper L’Union claim Aubameyang travelled to Alexandria in Egypt with his team-mates ahead of this afternoon’s clash.

But instead of joining them for the game, he boarded a chartered flight back to London.

Afrik-Foot claim some sources have suggested an injury could be behind the decision while further reports claim it was simply an agreement between Arsenal and the Gabonese FA.

Arsenal are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Liverpool looking to build on their impressive recent form.

The Reds have also been handed a boost as Egypt decided to keep Mohamed Salah on the bench.

He will of course be crucial for the Reds, who could be without Sadio Mane as well as Roberto Firmino due to injury.

Mikel Arteta’s international players are expected to report for training on Thursday ahead of the trip to Merseyside.

The Gunners are the Premier League’s most in-form team right now with 20 points from their past eight outings.

Arsenal were rooted to the foot of the table after three games heading into the first international break, having lost all three of their matches.

But they have been unbeaten since then, winning six and drawing twice.

Arteta’s plan is really starting to come good, much to the help of several new signings including Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Nuno Tavares.

All three having caught the eye in recent weeks as Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka continue to shine.

Smith Rowe was on target on his first start for England last night as they thumped San Marino 10-0 to secure qualification for the World Cup.

Arsenal can climb above Liverpool if they were to win at Anfield, a feat that no side has achieved so far this season.
