Ange Postecoglou was a ‘huge Liverpool fan’ but jokes ‘he’s taken posters down’

Ange Postecoglou has had to put his allegiance to Liverpool aside since taking over as Tottenham boss.

The Australian was born in Greece but became a football fanatic during his upbringing in Melbourne – taking a likeness to the Anfield superstars led by iconic manager Bill Shankly during the early 1970s. Having worked his way to the Premier League as a manager via Brisbane Roar, Australia and Celtic including others, Postecoglou has had to put his love of Liverpool to the back of his mind – as he told Gary Lineker on Football Focus.

During their chat, the 58-year-old said: "I was a massive Liverpool fan, loved Bill Shankly, loved the boot room and the stories…" Lineker then asked: "Are you still a Liverpool fan?"

As Postecoglou joked: "Well… I've taken the posters down mate… Last week! But you know that was kind of the fantasy world I built for myself and it wasn't just the playing, it was all of it.

"When I started playing the game I was self aware that there was a limit to where I was going to reach." He concluded: "I was a battler, I worked hard."
