Ange Postecoglou gives Tottenham dressing room view after Aston Villa loss
Ange Postecoglou previews Aston Villa clash
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou provided a dressing room insight after his team were defeated 2-1 by Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday. The Lilywhites took the lead midway through the first half as Giovani Lo Celso lashed the ball in from the edge of the penalty area. But Pau Torres headed home an equaliser in stoppage time at the end of the first half before Ollie Watkins popped up with the winner in the second period.
“Obviously it’s not great when you’re going through a run like this and we’re obviously down in numbers,” the Australian told the BBC after the match. “But, again, the players who were out there today – I couldn’t be happier with the way they approached the game.”
Tottenham carved out chance after chance against Unai Emery’s side as they went in search of their ninth Premier League victory of the campaign. Talisman Son Heung-min had three goals ruled out for offside, with Spurs also guilty of wasting opportunities as players either missed the target or were thwarted by away keeper Emi Martinez.
But, despite the defeat, Postecoglou insisted he was happy with the performance of his players. “A tough outcome but I couldn’t be happier with the way the boys played”, he told Sky Sports. “I’m really proud of them. I thought we played some fantastic football and on another day we would’ve won comfortably. I can’t fault the effort they put into the game.

“There’s no frustration. We played well and, as a manager, that’s all you can ask for. Sometimes the outcomes don’t go the way you want but, as a manager I want the players committed to what we are trying to do and they were all totally committed.
“On another day we would’ve had a few goals but it was a combination of outstanding goalkeeping and woodwork. From my perspective all I can ask is what they gave. The players played an outstanding game of football and as a manager that’s all we can ask for.”

Tottenham had stormed to the top of the Premier League table following a fine run of form at the start of the campaign. But ahead of the international break, they suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of Chelsea and Wolves. And their latest defeat means they are now four points adrift of top-flight leaders Arsenal.
The Lilywhites, who aren’t involved in Europe this season after finishing a lowly eighth in the Premier League table last time around, will travel to champions Manchester City next Sunday before hosting West Ham and Newcastle in their following two encounters.
