Wales TV chief leaves role after ‘behaving inappropriately’ in bars at World Cup
Rugby World Cup: George tells England to relish Fiji clash
Welsh broadcaster S4C have confirmed that their chief content officer Llinos Griffin-Williams has left the channel following allegations that she “behaved inappropriately” in French bars during the Rugby World Cup. Griffin-Williams had been in Nantes for Wales’ final pool stage match against Georgia, before arguing with members of the production staff.
She had only joined S4C in April 2022 and was producing the broadcaster’s programmes from the World Cup in France. The channel confirmed in a statement that they had been made aware of reports that the chief made “inappropriate comments” to members of the production staff from independent company Whisper – who had also been producing S4C’s broadcasts of the tournament.
The statement, in part, read: “According to information that has been shared with S4C News, Ms Griffin-Williams was in Nantes in her role as the channel’s Chief Content Officer for Wales’ last group game against Georgia. After the game, in two locations in the city, it is understood that an argument took place between her and the members of the company.
“According to reports, the first venue was a gig to mark Clwb Ifor Bach’s 40th anniversary, with the controversy continuing in a second bar in the city centre.”

The news comes after S4C had already been conducting an investigation into reports of “bullying” within the company from officers. No date has been set for the publication of that report, as the investigation began in May.
Earlier this year, the S4C board commissioned Capital Law to investigate serious bullying allegations made by members of staff at the Welsh language TV channel. According to a letter that had been sent to non-executive board members by broadcasting union Bectu, four of their members had been in tears as they described their situations at the company.

Carwyn Donovan, Bectu’s negotiation secretary in Wales, wrote the letter in which he described staff “regularly brought to tears” and “too scared to share their experience” and he claimed that the meeting was “the most shocking” in his career as a trade union representative.
S4C chairman Rhodri Williams then confirmed that an investigation would be undertaken and the letter “obviously didn’t make for comfortable reading,” and that “a number of points raised, if proved to be true, would give us serious concerns.”
He added: “They are not the type of things anyone responsible for any organisation would like to read, be that a private or a public organisation.”
At the time, Welsh Conservative culture spokesman Tom Giffard described the allegations as “deeply concerning”, and had a “wider impact on the reputation of our Welsh language broadcaster” as S4C has played a huge role in Welsh-language broadcasting since being established in 1982 – claiming that it contributed £141.1million to the Welsh economy in 2019-20.
