Wolff’s face says it all as Mercedes chief summoned to stewards at Abu Dhabi GP

Christian Horner lifts lid on 'serious talks' with Lewis Hamilton about joining Red Bull

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff’s face was priceless after he and Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur were summoned to the stewards at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for their sweary press conference last time out. The duo exited together and were spotted on their way to hear their punishment for lashing out in a media briefing in Las Vegas.

In a report published by the FIA on Thursday ahead of the final race of the season, the stewards noted: “The purpose of the Hearing will be to determine if there is a breach of Article 12.2.1.f of the FIA International Sporting Code and if so, what if any action should follow.”

Wolff was captured with a huge grin on his face as he was clearly aware that the F1 bosses may not have taken too kindly to his outburst last time out and is prepared for whatever punishment is dished out.

“It’s completely ridiculous,” Wolff said during an unusual press conference with other team principals in Las Vegas, including Vasseur as he was disappointed in the criticisms of the first race in Sin City following a lengthy delay in FP2. “How can you even dare talk bad about an event that sets the new standards to everything?

“And then you’re speaking about a f***ing drain cover that’s come undone, that’s nothing. It’s FP1, give credit to the people that have set up this grand prix. That have made this sport much bigger than it ever was.

“Have you ever spoken about someone or written a good word? You should about all these people that have been out here. Liberty [F1 owners] have done an awesome job and just because in FP1 a drain cover has come undone we shouldn’t be moaning.”

There was plenty of frustration during the session in Nevada that went into the early hours of the morning. A loose manhole cover caused excessive damage to the Ferrari car and Carlos Sainz was handed a 10-place penalty, deemed unfair by many around the grid, including Vasseur.

“What Carlos said was he hit something on track and didn’t know exactly what it was,” he explained before joining Wolff in struggling to hold back the expletives. “We completely damaged the monocoque, engine and battery. It’s just unacceptable.

“We f***ed up the session for Carlos and he won’t be part of FP2, that’s for sure because we have to change the chassis and set up the car. The show is the show and everything is going well but it’s unacceptable for F1 today.”
