Sainz breaks silence after thwarting attempted robbery hours after Italian GP

Ferrari Formula One star Carlos Sainz has spoken out for the first time since thieves attempted to steal his £500,000 watch just hours after the Italian Grand Prix.

According to reports, on Sunday evening Sainz was approached by three men outside the Armani Hotel in Milan who took his Richard Mille watch.

The Spaniard, his bodyguard and several passers-by gave chase however, blocking the robbers before handing them over to the police and retrieving the stolen watch.

Footage later emerged of Sainz and others talking to the police, with the reports saying that no one was harmed in the incident.

This has now been confirmed by the 29-year-old himself in a message to fans on Instagram on Monday morning that read: ‘As many of you already know, yesterday we experienced an unfortunate incident in Milan.

‘The most important thing is that we are all okay and this will only remain as an unpleasant anecdote.

‘Many thanks to all the people who helped us yesterday, to the Milan police for their quick intervention and thanks for all your messages.’

Sainz enjoyed his best weekend of the season so far at Monza, sensationally pipping Max Verstappen and teammate Charles Leclerc to pole, much to the delight of the Tifosi.

He bravely fought off the Dutchman for 14 laps but ultimately his Red Bull was just far too quick, with the runaway championship leader claiming a record-breaking 10th consecutive race win.

Sainz was later passed by the other Red Bull of Sergio Perez, but, after a brilliant battle with Leclerc, he held onto third to claim his first podium of 2023 and his first for Ferrari at their home race.

‘It was tough. It does not get tougher than it was out there today,’ Sainz, who was voted Driver of the Day by fans, said post-race.

‘Honestly, I spent the whole race pushing trying to keep the Red Bulls behind. In the end, I paid a bit of a price with the rear tyres.

‘It has always ben a pleasure to race Charles when I have had the chance. We had fun out there today.’
