Max Verstappen has told his doubters to ‘suck on an egg’ after the Dutchman bounced back to take pole position in style at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Question marks have surrounded Verstappen’s pace following his shock fifth-place finish at Singapore last time out, with speculation rife among the paddock that a new technical directive relating to Red Bull’s flexi-wing has stunted the all-conquering RB19.
But a bullish Verstappen, who was over half a second faster than Oscar Piastri in P2 at Suzuka, hit back at his naysayers on his mission to secure his third world title.
‘Singapore didn’t happen for us,’ he said.
‘Honestly, yeah, we had a bad weekend. Of course, then people start talking about “it’s all because of the technical directives.” I think they can go and suck on an egg.

‘From my side, I was just very fired up to have a good weekend here and make sure we were strong.’
Red Bull chief Christian Horner praised Verstappen’s ‘maturity’ in the wake of his disappointing result under the lights at Marina Bay’s iconic street circuit.
‘He has shown great leadership, great maturity in the way he handled it.
‘Of course, everybody was disappointed last weekend.
‘You get used to winning and it is a good reminder of how much it hurts to lose and if it doesn’t hurt to lose, you’re in the wrong business.
‘It was a good reminder of that. We took an awful lot of lessons last weekend.’
