F1 fans turn on Sergio Perez for ‘snitching on Hamilton’ in ‘cartoonish’ message

Sergio Perez received no sympathy from F1 fans after he demanded Lewis Hamilton be punished after he claimed the Brit gained an advantage off the track whilst overtaking him.

After a season of dominance by Red Bull in 2023, Singapore was a rude wake up call for the team as the car that has reigned supreme all season resembled nothing like a championship winning car at Marina Bay. And frustration for Perez was evident after his radio message regarding an overtake by Hamilton was criticised by fans.

Perez started in P13 after a spin in Q2 summed up a dismal qualifying for Red Bull as championship leader and the winner of the previous ten races Max Verstappen started in P11. And following a safety car that was brought out by Logan Sargeant’s shunt with the barriers, Red Bull made a brave call that backfired.

As the rest of the field opted to pit, the Red Bulls who were already on hard tyres decided to stay out for the safety car restart and were comprehensively swallowed up by the pack who had fresh hard tyres on.

And on lap 24, Hamilton took his chance to overtake Perez around the outside of turn seven and got the move done via a trip over the curb as Perez seemed to run him out of room. But the Mexican driver deemed the overtake to be illegal and on the radio cried: “Hamilton went off the track. He went off.”

Perez’s race engineer Hugh Bird replied: “Yeah we sat it,” before Perez hit back “Come on, give me the position now!” And Perez’s response brought plenty of flack on social media, one fan said on Twitter: “Perez snitching on Lewis with tears in his eyes and fists clenched.”

A second said: “Perez pushes Hamilton off the track and then acts like an innocent loser,” a third commented: “All Perez does is cry on radio,” whilst a fourth added: “Perez's radios are cartoonish, lol.”

Perez’s complaints fell on deaf ears as Hamilton kept the place, possibly owing to the Brit completing the overtake before he briefly left the track. The two Red Bulls continued to sink down the order as a dire Singapore weekend was further compounded. Perez finished in P8 whilst Hamilton finished on the podium after Mercedes team-mate George Russell crashed on the final lap.
