Maple Leafs’ Mitchell Marner scores highlight-reel goal vs. Sharks

It may have only been Mitchell Marner’s 16th goal of the year — but goodness, was it a beaut.

In the middle stanza of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ trip to the Shark Tank, Marner got the puck from Auston Matthews and then showed off the skill everyone associates with the fourth-year pro.

He took the puck, tapped it to himself and then passed it through his legs before finishing with a backhand while falling.

Yes, through his legs.

Highlight-reel goals have been plentiful this season across the NHL — such as Connor McDavid’s speed-demon goals for the Edmonton Oilers and Matthew Tkachuk’s between-the-legs scores for the Calgary Flames — but Marner’s may just be the cake-topper. It certainly didn’t hurt that he was crashing the net, but was also being circled by Sharks as he beat goaltender Martin Jones.

Marner is on pace to net 20 markers this year, which would be one above the lowest number of his career, which he put up in his rookie season. Getting him going would be a big plus for a Toronto team that’s still fighting for a playoff spot. The goal snapped a seven-game drought for the 22-year-old and is only his sixth goal since the calendar turned to 2020.
