Odell Beckham Jr. jersey number, explained: Why Rams WR can’t wear typical No. 13 jersey

The Rams and Odell Beckham Jr. had few issues negotiating a deal for Beckham to come to Los Angeles. The former Browns receiver inked a one-year deal worth $4.25 million.

It took Beckham a few days to officially agree to the deal with the Rams. That was partially due to him considering offers from other teams, like the Packers and Chiefs. However, it appears that there may have been another issue at play. Beckham’s jersey number. How did that become a potential sticking point? ESPN’s Adam Schefter has the answer.

One of the only holdups, according to sources, came when the sides discussed which jersey number Beckham would wear. Beckham discussed wearing Nos. 1, 3 and 13, but there were issues with each.

It’s unlikely that this was a serious issue, but it could have served as a tiebreaking factor if he liked another location as much as the Rams. That didn’t appear to happen.

What is Odell Beckham Jr.’s jersey number with the Rams?

Beckham has worn the No. 13 jersey throughout his career, but that belongs to Rams backup quarterback John Wolford. The NFL doesn’t allow midseason number changes, so if Beckham stays with the Rams in 2022 and wants to wear 13, he’ll have to get Wolford to trade it to him.

As for the other options, No. 1 most recently belonged to receiver DeSean Jackson, who asked for and was granted his release from the Rams after the 2021 NFL trade deadline. That could be available, but it seems like Beckham has more interest in wearing No. 3.

Running back Cam Akers is planning to switch to the No. 3 jersey before the 2022 season begins. He is out for the season after suffering a torn Achilles in July, however, so that number is still up for grabs the rest of this year. It seems like Beckham may take that number given a recent tweet from Akers.

So, expect Beckham Jr. to wear the No. 3 jersey during his Rams debut — however much he plays on offense.

How much will Odell Beckham Jr. play in Rams vs. 49ers?

Beckham may not see much playing time against the 49ers. NBC Sports’ Peter King wrote that Beckham would play “10 to 20 snaps” in his Rams debut on “Monday Night Football” against San Francisco. Ben Skowronek and J.J. Koski will take the other available snaps in place of the injured Robert Woods (torn ACL).

King also explained that Rams coach Sean McVay warned Beckham he will only see an increase in targets if he is able to work himself open on the play.

“When McVay was recruiting him, he was upfront with Beckham about his opportunities. McVay told him he couldn’t guarantee him X number of targets per game from Matthew Stafford,” King wrote, before noting McVay’s message to Beckham: “But I can tell you if you’re open, Matthew will get you the ball.”

Beckham may also get a chance to return punts. That could open up more opportunities for him to earn touches.
