Jose Mourinho sends message to Conor McGregor after meeting UFC legend in Rome

Two of the most outspoken men in sport met in Rome this weekend, with both marking the occasion with posts on social media.

Former Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho posted on Instagram to show fans he had met and spoken with UFC icon Conor McGregor in the Italian capital.

The Portuguese, currently manager of AS Roma, spoke with the MMA fighter and offered him a Giallorossi shirt as a way to mark the occasion.

In return, the football boss sampled some of the Irishman's Proper Twelve whiskey.

Alongside a gallery of photos showing their meeting, Mourinho wrote on Instagram: "Yes it’s him! Yes, the great @thenotoriousmma is in Rome and yes it was a real pleasure to meet him, to share some stories and to offer him the most beautiful shirt in town @officialasroma.

"He made a miracle, it’s impossible to say no to Conor, I had to try @properwhiskey. LEGENDA."

The UFC star returned the compliment by also referring to Mourinho as a legend in his Instagram story.

McGregor is in Rome for the baptism of his son Rian in the Vatican City, after chartering a flight to take his family and close friends to the Italian capital for the event.

He is also set to take delivery of a brand new £2.5m Lamborghini yacht.

The Irishman has been recovering from a broken leg suffered in his defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 earlier this year.

He recently announced he would be returning to Europe for a while as his recovery continues, and is spending the whole weekend in Rome with his large family.

McGregor has posted several photos and videos on his Instagram showing he and his entourage being mobbed by hundreds of fans all keen to grab a selfie with the former UFC champion.

McGregor hopes to return to the Octagon once he is fully recovered, and is eyeing up a fourth meeting with Poirier after their last fight ended prematurely with his injury.

Meanwhile, Mourinho has enjoyed a strong start to live as Roma manager.

His team sits fourth in the Serie A table and have won every game in the UEFA Conference League so far, with a huge clash against Italian giants Juventus coming up on Sunday.
