Ex-UFC star asks fans to pray for him before surgery after bare-knuckle KO

A former UFC star was left needing surgery after suffering a gruesome facial injury in a bare-knuckle fight which lasted less than a minute.

Melvin Guillard spent almost a decade in the UFC and has also competed in the Bellator championship, fighting big names like Donald Cerrone, Nate Diaz and Justin Gaethje.

But the middleweight was sent through the ropes by Joe Riggs after just 59 seconds in their Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship bout in Montana, making it four defeats from four since switching to that promotion.

It was clear almost immediately after Guillard hit the deck that he was in need of immediate medical attention, and the American took to social media a few hours later to show fans the extent of his injuries.

Alongside photos of a badly swollen eye, he posted a message confirming that he needed to go under the knife.

"Just found out, at 3.15am, I have five fractures in my orbital so I will be having surgery today," Guillard wrote.

"Just wanted to get my fans, friends and family the news. I'll be OK – just keep me in your prayers.

"I'll be lying if I said I wasn't a little scared right now. We'll see what happens."

A few hours later, he posted again to say he was leaving the hospital.

And his latest defeat in the ring appears to have done nothing to dampen his desire to continue to compete.

Should Melvin Guillard be stopped from competing for his own safety? Let us know in the comments section.

"Appreciate the love from all my fans and supporters… just not going to slow me down, [nor] stop me from accomplishing my goal," he added.

But the outcome of the bout has raised questions over the BKFC's matchmaking process.

Guillard went into the fight having failed to win in each of his previous 10 MMA outings, while opponent Riggs had lost only once since 2016.

One fan said on Twitter: "Melvin is a warrior but time has caught up with him. Both guys are great fighters."

Another added: "Guilard was in terrible shape for this. His punches looked slow and he went down from the first punch Riggs threw. He seriously needs to stop."

A third said: "Certain fighters need to be banned from fighting for their own well being. Melvin Guillard is one of them."

And MMA reporter Tom Taylor said: "No commission should be letting Melvin Guillard fight at this point."
